PHOENIX, Arizona – February 22, 2010– Chef Dan Moody (also known as The RelationChef) and the Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) of Arizona announced that they will participate in the Chef for a Night program on Saturday, March 27, 2010 for the residents of HomeBase Youth Services (HBYS) of Phoenix.
Chef for a Night is a special program offered by HBYS that creates an opportunity for kids to work together to prepare a meal and serve their community, while also learning new cooking skills in the kitchen. As a mentor for BHGH of Arizona for more than two years, Chef Dan Moody is returning as the guest Chef for this special program as a way to support the community and teach BHGH scholars about the importance of serving others.
“I am a firm believer that food and the experience of cooking and eating together, ultimately brings people together,” said Chef Dan Moody, The RelationChef. “What I love about doing Chef for a Night with the BHGH scholars is that it brings two groups of underprivileged children together for a night and in a way, both sides are helping each other grow. It’s so great to see two amazing community programs bond through the experience of cooking and serving food.”
Nearly 20 kids, ranging in age from 12 to 15 years (grades 6th through 8th) will participate in the Chef for a Night program on March 27 at HBYS’s Nicholas Transitional Living Center in Phoenix. Chef Dan will first discuss how to work in a kitchen and provide some basic kitchen and food safety rules, break the kids into groups and assign one adult volunteer to each group. Each group will receive a different recipe for a meat, vegetable or dessert dish and work together to create their contribution to the meal, which will feed 30 people. Throughout the process, Chef Dan will offer various knife skills, cooking and safety tips along the way, while coordinating the timing of all dishes.
Once the meal is ready to go, Chef Dan will teach the kids how to plate their food appropriately and will then assist as they serve the residents of HBYS. Finally, Chef Dan and the kids will be responsible for clean up and leave the kitchen as they found it.
“Chef Dan has provided our scholars the opportunity to serve others, while learning valuable life skills centered on cooking,” said Greg Harman, executive director of BHGH of Arizona. “Serving others and taking the time to assist and help those in need is a tremendous lesson that he is helping to instill in our students. Boys Hope Girls Hope of Arizona is very thankful for the support that Chef Dan has offered our program and our scholars.”
